I’m Mark, a self-confessed start-up addict and engineer. I came to San Diego to find out about this strange phenomena called DivX and ended up getting to know some really good people there. As luck would have it, when I left DivX, some of my favorite co-workers had also decided it was time to “find the next thing to do”.

The thing that really resonates with me about OpenCandy is the potential to help good projects reach people.

As a developer, I can’t count the number of projects that I’ve wanted to start but didn’t because reaching the user base would be too daunting.

As an entrepreneur, I can’t count the number of times I wished I could tap into a grass roots network of people entrenched in a niche market, instead of bleeding cash into old fashioned advertising channels.

As an end-user, I can’t count the number of really great tools that I’ve come across that were written by someone in their spare time but ended up abandoned because there was no way to grow it into a full time job.

Viola, OpenCandy was born in a series of coffee shop conversations about what we could do that we would be passionate about. OpenCandy is the partner I wish that I had to help me in my previous endeavors.

Having worked up and down the food chain at a number of previous companies, I was tagged to drive the development team and be the resident curmudgeon. I have a love hate relationship with Agile development practices, have been known to fall asleep with my face planted in a budget spreadsheet, and have promised my girlfriend that she’ll still get lots of “quality time” while we make this thing grow. I’m hoping she’ll forgive me eventually.
