We’re Sponsoring Packt’s “Most Promising Open Source Project” Award!!!!

packt os awards small We’re Sponsoring Packts “Most Promising Open Source Project” Award!!!!For an app-o-holic like me, OpenCandy is an exciting place to work; and I’m not just talking about the occasional frolf game when I say that (though we do go on some excellent nontraditional corporate outings). What really excites me about working at OpenCandy is the fact that I get to be part of a team that’s dedicated to helping innovative developers and their software projects grow and be more successful. Our involvement with open source software, in particular, goes back to our inception when we reached out to large and small projects for advice on what we, as a company, could do to help developer teams of every size and variety.

An Idea Is Born
One idea we came up with was to host a contest for open source projects as a way to bring awareness (and cash rewards) to the next generation of “Firefoxes” out there. While doing some research on what it would take to run such a contest, we discovered that Packt Publishing had decided to expand their successful CMS (Content Management System) Awards to cover some exciting new categories this year (and rename the contest the “Packt Open Source Awards”). As it turned out, they were planning to run their expanded contest during the same time period we were contemplating launching our own.

An Idea Evolved
Wouldn’t it be awesome, we thought, if we could combine forces and find a way to help Packt with the Open Source Awards they were already planning to run? Well, after contacting Packt and working out the details, I’m proud to announce that we are officially sponsoring the “Most Promising Open Source Project” award category in this year’s Packt Open Source Awards.

The Idea Comes to Fruition
The Most Promising Open Source Project category is open to ANY open source project that was started after August 9, 2008. The nomination period for the Packt 2010 Open Source Awards began on August 9, 2010 and will end on September 17, 2010. At that point, the top five nominees in each category will move toward the final voting round which runs from September 27, 2010 to November 5, 2010. The three winning projects in each category will be announced on November 15. The winning projects in each category will be awarded $2,500 while second place will be awarded $1,000 and $500 will go to the third place finisher.
