CandyPick #8 HTTrack, Download Entire Websites, Prevent 1984-style Memory Holes (free)
HTTrack Website Copier is a free, GPL-licensed program that allows you to download an ENTIRE copy of a website for viewing locally on your own computer (without an internet connection). There are many reasons for needing a local copy of a website. Sometimes it’s nice to have a copy of an older version to refer to after you’ve posted a new version. Other times, like when Geocities disappeared, you may want to be able to archive your own personal site for posterity.
What’s in a Name?
The name HTTrack is the general name for a multi-platform app which sports a Windows version called WinHTTrack and Linux/BSD/OSX versions (ready to go packages in multiple flavors) called WebHTTrack. There is also a handy portable version for running HTTrack on a USB stick so you can use it on any Windows machine without actually installing the program.
What’s in a HTTrack?
HTTrack doesn’t just download web pages, text and images; you can set it to download *any* type of file(s), like music, videos or applications while it crawls a site. You can even set HTTrack to follow links to external websites and download the associated pages or content from those sites too. There are a lot of so-called “offline browsers” of which HTTrack is one, but none have the combination of speed, stability and ease of use that HTTrack does.
Why Should I HTTrack?
HTTrack makes for a wonderful addition to your software library. The program has been regularly updated over the years and the developer(s) have done a fantastic job making a stable, useful piece of software. Whether you’re a web developer, amateur (or clinically diagnosed) web content collector, or a fictional character plugging away at correcting history in a gray cubicle buried deep within the Ministry of Truth, I highly suggest you check it out.
This is Dr. Apps (on his continuing mission to help you build your software library one great app at a time), signing off for now. As always, in the meantime, follow me on Twitter.
